Did you know it’s super easy to learn how to macrame? It only takes a few basic knots to create your very first macrame project. Here’s how to get started!
Whenever fall sets in and the days get shorter, I love to pick up my all-time favorite hobby: Macrame. It only took me watching a couple of Youtube videos to master the technique so I’m pretty sure you can do it too.
What do you need to macrame?
- Macrame Cord: You can use any kind of cord, twine, or rope. Most projects are created with rope made out of cotton, hemp, jute, or synthetic material which come in different sizes, twists, and colors.
- Rod: You’ll need something to tie your knots to. To save costs, you can start your first project on a branch. Other popular choices include dowel rods, hoops, and rings.
Which macrame cord should you buy?
- Working Cord: The cord or cords that you use to make the knots.
- Filler Cord: The cord or cords that your knots wrap around.
- Lark’s Head Knot
- Square Knots
- Half Knots
- Spiral Stitch
- Half Hitch
You will need a bit of practice before your projects start looking amazing, so make sure to start small. I found it easiest to start off with a keychain hanger as these mostly only require the basic knots.
Once you got the basic knots down, you can pick from various projects such as wall pieces, curtains, macrame earrings, necklaces and whatever else you can think of. Here are 25 easy macrame projects to get you started and inspired!
